Free, fast and fair: the global primary research record where researchers publish their work in full detail

Octopus is a new publishing platform for scholarly research. Funded by UKRI – the UK government research funder.

Here researchers can publish all their work for free, in full detail, enabling peer review and quality assessment, gaining credit for what they have done, and allowing the research community to build upon it.

UK Government Areas of Research Interest

Octopus is now populated with research problems derived from Areas of Research Interest published by UK Government departments. To view these, click on the button below. Publishing a Rationale/Hypothesis linked to one of these Research Problems will give the option of passing your details to the relevant government department. We hope this helps collaboration between government and researchers.

Recording your work on Octopus is different from publishing a paper. There are eight publication types that are aligned with the research process and designed to help researchers of all types share their work and be recognised for it.

Anyone can read anything in Octopus – it's designed to make primary research openly available to all.

Every publication in Octopus is linked to another, forming branching chains of research. You can navigate these chains from every publication page to browse areas of research and discover something new.

Before you can publish research work, you need to create an account via ORCID®. ORCID is a system of unique, persistent digital identifiers developed specifically for researchers.

Octopus is designed to incentivise best practice in research, utilise the opportunities of open access, and to improve the research culture.

Review our FAQs to find out more about how the platform works.

Many times, it is recommended to publish in Non-APC journals . In this blog post, We will be describing how to publish a research paper free of cost. We will also provide a list of free publishing open-access journals where researchers can publish their research papers without any publication fees.

Researchers can share their research in the research community without cost as a preprint. However, the preprints are not peer-reviewed.

Researchers can publish their research free of cost in journals with non Open Access options . Journals published by Springer , Elsevier , Taylor & Francis, IEEE, and other reputed publishers provide researchers an option to publish either open-access (OA) or non-open-access. The open access option can make access to the published works limited.

The next option is to publish in the conference proceedings . Most of the conference proceedings publish research free of cost.

How to find free publishing research journals?

There are so many free-publishing open-access research journals . Make sure, you select reputable journals having an impact factor or any other ranking metric . The reputable journals are indexed in Scopus / Web of Science / DOAJ / UGC CARE list . You can search for journals that are published by reputable publishers or by Some Universities/ Institutions.

Different ways for finding journals that publish without publication fees :

Access the PhDTalks Journal Finder Tool that lists more than 10,000 free publishing research journals.

The  Directory of Open Access Journals  currently indexes 13,100 journals that don’t charge APCs to the authors (out of 19,132).

Publishing Open Access

What is open access, how to make your article open access, find a journal's open access policies, choose a create commons license, additional resources.

  • Ask Us We can consult with Stanford GSB researchers to provide additional assistance.
  • Uploading Working Papers Guide

Open Access (OA) research is made available freely online, removing barriers to access and increasing visibility.

Stanford's Open Access policy requires Academic Council members to make their scholarly articles available to the public via Open Access.

The two most common ways to make your work Open Access are called "green" and "gold" Open Access.

Green Open Access

Also called "Self Archiving", this is the most common option, where the author puts a copy in an institutional repository (e.g. the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR) ) or a subject repository (like SSRN or ArXiV ).

Your agreement with your publisher will specify which version of your paper you can post (e.g. pre-print or post-print). Typically the publisher will not let you post the fully-formatted published version of the article, often called the Version of Record.

Gold Open Access

This is when your published, Version of Record, paper is freely and immediately available on the journals' website. This typically requires the author/institution to pay an article publishing charge (APC).

Gold Open Access publishing fess are waived for Stanford authors in many Cambridge University Press journals.

Most journals offer Open Access publishing options. You can often find a journal's Open Access policies on their website, or try:

  • Open Policy Finder A database of open access policies and requirements for journals, publishers, and funders. Formerly Sherpa services.

When you publish or post your work Open Access you will likely be asked how you want to license your work. Most publishers allow you to pick from a list of Creative Commons (CC) licenses.

Creative Commons (CC) licenses are free copyright licenses that give individuals and organizations a simple and standardized way to grant copyright permissions to their creative work.

The Acronyms

  • CC (Creative Commons) : Creative Commons is the organization that created these licenses.
  • BY (Attribution) : Credit needs to be given to use the work.
  • NC (Non-Commercial) : Any copies/displays/derivative works can only be used for non-commercial purposes.
  • ND (No Derivatives) : No derivative works can be made, any copies/displays/distributions must be verbatim copies of the original.
  • SA (Share Alike) : Others can distribute your work, but only under the same conditions/license that you used.

Open Preprints

Creative Commons (CC) and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) are collaborating to promote the use of the CC BY 4.0 license on preprints. Openly licensing preprints enables researchers and readers to benefit from rapid dissemination, rigorous review, and equitable contribution to scientific knowledge that doesn’t require paid access to exclusive research journals. As part of this initiative, we develop and share practical licensing guidance for researchers in the life sciences, as well as make policy recommendations for funders and preprint servers.

Empowering Researchers to Participate in Equitable Knowledge Ecosystems

Preprints are complete drafts of scientific research articles posted to an online repository before formal peer review. Online repositories are web-based platforms that publish research outputs for scholarly publication. Preprints have long been part of the scientific publishing ecosystem. As the research community commits to much more open practices, preprints are increasingly becoming a vehicle for scientific dissemination.

Preprints in Action

In the first 10 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, 10,232 COVID-19–related preprints were posted to bioRxiv and medRxiv. This meant that research about the pandemic that would otherwise take longer to be released in paywalled journals was available immediately. This moment gave attention to the critical need for timely and open access to research findings.

The increasing use of preprints in life sciences highlights the need for openly licensed research to realize their full potential for rapid and equitable knowledge dissemination. We aim to expand the adoption of the CC BY license on life sciences preprints, fostering a robust open access ecosystem. By developing model policies, training funders, and partnering with preprint servers to streamline open licensing practices, CC seeks to ensure that grant-funded research outputs are accessible, adaptable, and aligned with the growing demand for transparency and collaboration in scientific communication.

This initiative contributes to our goal of  defending and advocating for a thriving commons, by embedding open licensing practices into critical research workflows. Researchers benefit from faster dissemination of their work, increased visibility, and enhanced opportunities for collaboration and peer engagement. The general public gains unrestricted access to life-changing research, promoting broader understanding, innovation, and the equitable sharing of scientific advancements. [link to the preprints blogpost as a contextualized sentence]

If you publish research, you can publish to preprint servers and select a CC BY license. CC BY is the best option to openly license your preprint because it maximizes reuse and minimizes the complexity of navigating legal terms when sharing your research.
