ICT and Computing Personal Statement

I wish to study an IT and Computer related course as I believe both of these subjects will provide the basis for me to progress into a career with great potential.  I am a hardworking, ambitious young man who is looking forward to the many challenges that University will bring me.

I believe the use of IT are the foundations of major businesses and help them to grow and develop. With the improvements in technology businesses are always looking to strengthen their IT systems to enhance their performance and efficiency. I hope to develop my existing skills and knowledge to become a successful computer technician.

Currently I am studying Level 3 Business and IT Double Award. These are my favourite subjects because I am a huge enthusiast of IT and Business. I have learned the key components of a computer system and how each components works within the system. This knowledge would allow me to consult others and possibly support individuals or businesses to upgrade their IT operations.

Computer development has been a part of my life since an early age. During my childhood I would enjoy developing and constructing technology devices. Learning kinetically about new and advance technological equipment sparked my interest in the subject. My interest rapidly developed through my education at school, these experiences combined with my Business acumen has strengthened my desire to study these subjects at a higher level.

Presently I am learning about the history of computer technology. This was part of my assignment to acknowledge how our society has changed the way we use computers.  To reinforce my knowledge I recently attended a trip to the Centre of Life to learn the history of gaming, computers and IT systems. I was able to use and assess the quality of the computers equipment, nowadays modern day laptops have 1.9GHZ speeds and 1TB RAM  of memory compared to a 30 year old, Commodore 64 which is a  8-bit home computer with a 1.023MHz processor, 64kb RAM memory, 320×200 display output, 16 colours with a weight of 1.8kg, a basic 2.0 Commodore GEOS operating systems and an estimated of 10,000 commercial software which are specifically designed for this computer including office applications, games and development tools. This visit allowed me to gain the knowledge on how technology improves within the years and learnt me about the different parts of computer system. Attending university will offer me the opportunity to gain more experience and learn about computer information and systems.

When I was in year 11 I secured a week’s work experience at Sainsbury’s, my role was to interact with the customers, insure the shelves were frequently stocked and to help the cashiers. This experience was great as I was able to work as part of a successful team and the job allowed me to take on additional responsibilities. I learnt the importance of being reliable, trustworthy and excellent customer service. During my time there I developed my decision making and communication skills. I also realised how important their IT system was insuring the smooth running of the business. There main IT system at Sainsbury’s was the barcode scanners because each item has a unique code to clarify the right product and price that the company have listed on the till monitoring screen. This also takes into consideration stock control and informs the company of how many items the store has sold.

In my spare time I like to play seven a side football weekly at my local Sport Centre. I enjoy keeping healthy alongside the socially interaction of playing sports with my friends. We also visit the cinemas to watch the latest films. As a football fan I attend all of my favourite football team’s home games.

I am a highly motivated individual, thieve under pressure and capable to work in any circumstances, that involves in my subjects and I always give my 100% because I am determined to do well in my future career and to have a satisfied life that I deserve.

A good Software Engineering Personal Statement statement for software engineering is your ticket to a tech career .

As computer technology continues to evolve, writing a good personal statement is more important than ever.

With my years of reviewing interview applications I’ll show you how to write a great statement that shows your passion for software engineering and computer tech.

When I read personal statements, I look for more than technological excellence, I look for personality and professionalism.

Writing a Strong personal statement for software engineering

Your statement should start by telling your story of how you got into software engineering, especially if you started early.

Many successful candidates show their natural aptitude for computer programming from an early age or early projects.

I’m impressed by a story. I want to know about you and your background. When I read a personal statement, I’m looking for someone who is passionate about the field and I want to see them show me their passion.

Whether you started by exploring computer systems or teaching yourself to code, these early experiences form the foundation of your narrative.

When writing your UCAS personal statement focus on authenticity.

Universities want to see real enthusiasm for computer science and practical experience.

Your statement should show both your theoretical understanding and hands on experience of computer tech and how these have prepared you for a career as a software developer .

Don’t forget admissions tutors are looking for more than technical knowledge.

They want to see your motivation, creativity and potential for growth in software engineering .

Consider including examples of how you’ve overcome challenges or contributed to team projects .

My favourite personal statements that I read contain challenges that are nothing to do with software. I like stories that are different, but where the abstract problem solving shown can be applied to software as well.

Tell them of times you’ve shown leadership skills, or used different methods of running programs.

I want to see your personality.

Software Engineering Fundamentals

Software has changed the modern world so you need to show you understand the basics.

Your statement should show how computer science intersects with different industries and innovations including artificial intelligence and data analytics . I want to know that you see the practical applications of software on the world.

Key areas to cover in your statement:

Your experience of different areas of computer science

Your approach to problem solving in technical situations

How software engineering drives innovation

Your practical computer programming projects

Emerging computer tech trends

Consider including specific projects or experiences that show your understanding of the basics.

This could be coursework, personal projects or extracurricular activities that show your commitment to learning and applying software engineering concepts.

Technical Skills

In software engineering theoretical knowledge must be balanced with practical skills. Your statement should show me:

Projects that demonstrate your computer science skills

Real world applications of your software engineering skills

Problem solving in development scenarios

Experience of different programming languages

Software development methodologies

Include specific examples of how you’ve applied computer science concepts in real world scenarios.

This shows not just your knowledge but your ability to turn theory into practice.

Describe any significant projects you’ve done, challenges you’ve overcome and lessons you’ve learned from hands on experience. Tell me a story.

When talking about technical projects focus on your problem solving process rather than the end result.

Explain how you approached the problem, what alternatives you considered and why you made specific technical decisions.

Future and Professional Development

Software engineering is constantly evolving so continuous learning is essential.

Your statement should show your commitment to growth and your vision for the field.

How do you plan to build on your computer science foundation and adapt to new ideas and emerging technologies?

I want you to consider:

Areas of software engineering that interest you

Technologies or methodologies you want to get into

How you keep up to date with industry news

Your long term career goals

What you hope to contribute to the field

Writing and Structure

When writing your UCAS statement keep it simple and logical from your initial interest in software engineering to your future goals.

Start with a hook that shows your passion for software engineering

Show practical computer programming experience

Show understanding of computer science basics

Highlight problem solving experiences

Link your background to your software engineering goals

Keep your writing clear, concise and jargon free unless you really need to use technical terms.

Each paragraph should flow into the next to tell the story of your journey and aspirations in software engineering.

This personal statement is also a good way to show off your communications skills.

Communication skills are key skills that help in solving problems as a group, team work uni business in general.

Final Thoughts

I’ve read thousands of personal statements, and your statement should:

Show your commitment to computer science

Computer science personal statement example 101.

Having gained life experience in troubleshooting computers, and a desire to understand how they work, led me to realise I want to study computer science. Being able to recognise issues in data or an opportunity to further advance life changing technology, requires a lot of problem-solving skills and is a career that I want to join and make a mark on. I want to be in a career that needs a logical approach, but also needs an open-mindedness to other perspectives.

I have previous knowledge of the programming language JavaScript as I had self-studied it through online research. I started off creating static web pages, but then created one where the functionality of it was to make a sound and the user had to guess from one of the multiple pictures of instruments on which one it was. My first introduction to coding was in middle school when my class group decided to make an app to support our school canteen. It was to have an order functionality for the attendings students. My project management and cooperation skills were enhanced through this project. Unfortunately, the project was shelved due to the limited resources we had at the time, but it began my interest in technology itself.

I was also part of a summer program in 2012 at a local science centre called 'Vilvite'. The summer program consisted of being introduced to robot programming and competition at the end to ascertain how much we learned. Groups of two were to program a robot through an obstacle course and apply different sensors to the robot. This benefitted me with better communication and strategy planning skills.

Secondly, I was chosen to be featured in a blog post about a national youth activity program called 'Trivselsprogrammet,' due to the program being awarded a huge financial sum by The Crown Prince and Crown Princess' Foundation. This program helped primary and secondary schools with recess activities and keeping kids active, which I was a part of and took charge of activities throughout my time in primary and secondary school.

Additionally, I have experience in volunteering in various youth organisations, such as being the financial controller of a youth organisation called Day's Work based in Norway in 2019. Through this, I developed my problem-solving skills and online interpersonal skills using Microsoft Teams. My roles included being a student representative for my school in the Student Council of Bergen City, then student leader in my high school and worked my way up to vice president of the Hordaland country. I gained the necessary skills in team management, planning and execution of a plan, and having a good eye for detail.

My 4-year experience as a basketball coach and team captain at my local sports club in Norway has taught me how to have patience and developed my teamwork skills. By having open communication with my teams that I coached and played with, I learned how to look at things from unique perspectives, accepting and giving feedback after each game, and improved my organization and time management skills. Whether it was a complex strategy or just a simple one, I took input from every team member and kid that I coached.

I have always been motivated to be the best there is, whether it was being the best at writing at school, the best at youth politics or the best basketball player back then. So, my long-term plan is to make my mark in computer science as well and to do this I want to get the most out of university. It will allow me to develop the skills I have already gained, as well as new ones, to help tackle any challenges that I face in the future.
