Rakshitha Mohankumar 11-16-12 AP English Language Period 3 Timed Writing: In Cold Blood Option C In part three of Capote's In Cold Blood, the book gives a more clear understanding of how Perry and Dick came to know of the Clutters and earned their “score”. It has detailed excerpts from interviews with Floyd Wells, Dick's friend from prison who is also the same person who tells him everything he needs to know about the Clutters, as well as, Mr and Mrs. Hickock, Dick's parents who are worried for their son and concerned about his whereabouts.

The author was able to create and portray a good amount of sympathy for Dick's parents by making them appear poor and gentle as well as by how they speak about their son, and are willing to forgive him for his mistakes. In creating sympathy for the parents, the author also indirectly creates some sympathy for Dick by using certain quotes, by Mr. Hickock, that describe his life before he went into prison. There are many ways in which Truman Capote portrays sympathy for the Hickocks in this section. He uses interviews from the locals who live around where Dick's family lives.

When Officer Nye investigates the nearby folks, one farmer's wife tells him,“Don't talk to me about Dick Hickock! If ever I met the devil! [... ] Dick would've gone to jail more times than you can count, except nobody around here ever wanted to prosecute out of respect for his folks. ” Essentially, she is trying to say that although Dick gets into plenty of trouble, no one ever really says anything about it, out of kindness to his parents, who are “both plain and honest people. ” Capote also uses certain phrases and quotes that stand out to the reader, which in turn evokes sympathy, from the interview with Dick's parents themselves. He wanted to go on to college. Study to be an engineer . But we couldn't do it. Plain didn't have the money. Never have had any money. ” The fact that they are not a rich and well-off family is made clear when Mr. Hickock says that he couldn't afford to send his son to college. This also is an indication of how Dick's life would have turned out to be different than what it was currently, if he had gone to college. Both Dick's parents never really blame their son for his faults. Rather, they blame it on someone or something else. “That friend of his. That's what happened” is what Mrs.

Hickock tells Officer Nye, implying that Perry is the one who was at fault for all the mishaps that Dick had been burdened with. They are typical parents, painting their son in perfect light, and thinking that in no way is he at fault, instead, only badly influenced. The author, by creating sympathy for the parents also creates sympathy for Dick and makes him seem more human. He uses a quote from Dick's father “I've not got long, I'm with cancer, and Dick knowed that, and not a month ago, right before he took off, he told me, 'Dad, you've been a pretty good old dad to me.

I'm not ever gonna do nothing more to hurt you. '[... ] That boy has plenty of good inside of him. ” In the first two parts of the book, Dick is known to have cared for his family and this just elaborates on that fact. It humanizes Dick and makes him more compassionate. It shows that he is wary of how he has upset his parents and that he is not deliberately hurting them. The aforementioned quote also makes the reader sympathize for the father because it states that he has cancer and knows he is not going to live long.

Adding in a disease or illness of sorts always has some sentimental effect on the reader and the author must have chosen this particular quote for that purpose. One last quote that stood out as a form of sympathy for Dick's parents is “Ashamed and afraid. Of what he's done. Of how he's hurt us again. And afraid because he thinks we won't forgive him. Like we always have. And always will. ” This quote is from Mrs. Hickock and it signifies a parent's, or more specifically, a mother's love for her child. As Dick's parents, they are always willing to forgive him no matter how many mistakes he has made or how badly he has hurt them.

He is their son and it shows that, no matter what kind of a person he turned out to be, they have and always will love him and be there for him. This creates sympathy, more for Dick's parents rather than Dick himself, because it signifies that they are good, loving, and caring parents who see past the faults and errors of their children. There are a few people who might say Dick is “undeserving” of such loving and kind-hearted people for parents. These are just a few outstanding ways in which Truman Capote portrayed sympathy for Mr and Mrs. Hickock.

In cold blood assignment, type in red, directions : ap language and composition is a course requiring knowledge of specialized, terminology. these words deepen your power of description and analysis and lend precision to the, arguments you make. each entry should be typed (see example below) as well as provide an example, from the book and illustration of how that term is used or what effect it creates., sample entry :, inverted syntax: physical arrangement of words in a sentence outside of normal word order, which is, subject-verb-object., example: “in a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit” from tolkien’s the hobbit. sometimes the object, comes before the subject, as in “him i admire.”, how used/what effect: inversions are used to achieve stylistic effects like putting an emphasis on a, particular point or changing the form of a particular point., the last to see them alive (pp. 1-74), concrete details: language that describes specific, observable things, people or places, rather, than ideas or qualities., example: “some seventy miles east of the colorado border, the countryside, with its, hard blue skies and desert-clear air, has an atmosphere that is rather more far west than, middle west. the local accent is barbed with a prairie twang...”(capote 3)., how used/what effect: the author providing us with this context almost paints the setting for, the reader. from this descriptive verbale illustration, i can now start to understand the text a bit, more and start to put big ideas together. it is important for the author to state/describe the, setting, so that the reader can fully understand the bigger picture at hand., irony: general name given to literary techniques that involve differences between appearance, and reality, expectation and result, or meaning and intention - types are dramatic, situational,, and verbal., example: “... mr. clutter had of necessity learned to cook; either her or nancy, but, principally nancy, prepared the family meals. mr. clutter enjoyed the chore, and was, excellent at it-no woman in kansas baked a better loaf of salt-rising bread, and his, celebrated coconut cookies were the first item to go at charity cake sales...”(capote 9)., how used/what effect: this excerpt from the text is an example of situational irony. i think this, because i find it ironic that a man is better at cooking/baking than a woman, for the current time, period that the book was written in and based in. typically in that day and age women were the, ones who were good at cooking and things of that nature, while the men found success in things, like construction and working with their hands out in the field. so to read that a man is better, than the women in his town at cooking/baking is humering., foreshadowing: use in a literary work of clues that suggest events that have yet to occur., example: “the stoeckleins and their three children lived in a house not a hundred yards, from the main road house; except for them, the clutters had no neighbors within half a, mile”(capote 12)., how used/what effect: the author almost makes an emphasis on the fact that the clutters are, separated from everyone else. this could potentially be hinting to the reader that something bad, may occur big or small, but at the end of the day the clutters will be unable to reach someone,, or someone will be unable to reach the clutters. something else i realized/noticed was a lot of, people that live in rural communities, have houses that are typically not right next to someone, else's. so i feel like the author didn’t need to include that note to the reader, unless they were, hinting at something., non sequitur: latin term which refers to a conclusion or inference that does not logically follow., fallacy where disconnect occurs between a conclusion and the reasons/premises that lead to it., example: “i thought maybe the child was hurt. it seemed to me the first thing to do was, call an ambulance. miss kidwell-susan-she told me there was a telephone in the kitchen., i found it, right where she said. but the receiver was off the hook, and when i picked it, up, i saw the line had been cut”(capote 60)., how used/what effect: i feel like this was an example of non sequitur because both of the, man's daughters are running out of the house saying nancy is dead or that nancy had a really, bad nose bleed, and without even checking he just calls 911. i feel like in a situation like this, mr., ewalt should have gone into the house and checked it out for himself, before jumping to call, 911, since his daughters had different stories/viewpoints. to me at least, it just doesn’t add up, and it almost makes mr. ewalt looks suspicious. it was as if he had already known exactly what, had happened and didn’t even feel the need to check. maybe him going to the phone in their, house to dial 911 was just an act, maybe he knew the phone line had already been cut, and he, was just trying to look like the “good guy”. i’m not necessarily saying that mr. ewalt killed the, clutter’s, but his actions just don’t sit right with me., mood: the feeling or atmosphere created in a work., example: “... i wondered could i bring her over there this morning and you show her, normally nancy would willingly have taught jolene to prepare an entire turkey dinner;, starving”(capote 10)., how used/what effect: i feel like this excerpt from the text is something that is not reasonable, in society during that time period. mr. clutter is seen to be judging anyone who drinks or, smokes, which is fine to have your opinion, but i feel that during that time period in the 1900’s,, everyone smoked and drinked regularly, especially smoked. so i feel like it’s a bit unreasonable, for mr. clutter to terminate someone for just drinking or smoking on their own time. i could, understand if it was on the job or if the person was addicted to the said substance, but mr., clutter is trying to control what his workers do outside of work which is very unreasonable and, inappropriate., objective: not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts., example: “she lived alone with her mother, who taught music at holcomb school, and, she did not remember her own father very clearly, for years ago, in their native california,, mr. kidwell had one day left home and not come back”(capote 21)., how used/what effect: this quote informs the reader about susans past and her family issues., this example does not show susans emotion towards the matter or even give much of her, opinion/point of view. it just tells the reader that her father had left her mother and her, and she, does not remember much about him. overall, this statement is very to the point..
